Ashley Cosme is selected as the NJFEA Student of the Month for May 2013.

Ashley Cosme, a senior at University High School, has been selected as the NJFEA Student of the Month. Although Ashley is a relatively new member of her NJFEA chapter (since October 2012), her experience as a teacher’s aide at a local daycare center during the summer of 2012 spurred her interest in teaching. As Ashley settled into her role as a teacher’s aide, she became comfortable with small children and loved working with them. This experience taught her to connect with the students, which deepened her desire to teach. Through her involvement in her NJFEA chapter and other extracurricular activities, Ashley gained further experience with children and enhanced her public speaking skills.

Ashley also participated in Junior Achievement High School Heroes Program, and previously served as a volunteer nurse’s aide in the Pediatric Unit of Clara Mass Hospital.

“Here’s a fact that may not surprise you: the children of the rich perform better in school, on average, than children from middle-class or poor families. Students growing up in richer families have better grades and higher standardized test scores, on average, than poorer students; they also have higher rates of participation in extracurricular activities and school leadership positions, higher graduation rates and higher rates of college enrollment and completion.”
